Neon Potato, the party game

A neon twist on the hot potato game: pass the phone around, a category appears, answer before the potato blows up. Free, with no limit on games.

In the GAMBR app, on iPhone, iPad and Android. No account, no ads, works offline.

How to play

  1. Pick 2 to 8 players and how many explosions knock a player out (1 to 5).
  2. The first player is drawn at random and lights the fuse: a category appears.
  3. They say one answer out loud, tap “Pass” and hand the phone to the next player.
  4. The fuse burns for a hidden time that changes every round. The ticking speeds up and the phone vibrates.
  5. BOOM: whoever holds the phone takes an explosion and lights the next fuse.
  6. The first player to reach the chosen number of explosions loses. The podium appears.

A hot potato game with nothing to set up

Neon Potato takes the classic hot potato idea: something gets passed around and nobody wants to be holding it when it blows up. Here, that something is the phone. Every time it reaches you, a category appears (“a country”, “something round”, “something in the kitchen”) and you have to say an answer out loud before passing it on. No cards, no board, no pencil: one phone is all you need.

It is a great way to kick off a game night, fill the wait while everyone arrives, or end the evening laughing with friends, family or teens.

The fuse, the ticking and the BOOM

The fuse burns for a hidden time, drawn at random every round. Nobody knows when the potato will blow. The ticking speeds up as time goes by, the phone vibrates and the neon fuse burns down on screen. When it goes off, whoever holds the phone takes an explosion and lights the next fuse.

Sound plays even when the phone is on silent, and you can mute it with the speaker button.

Special cards

Now and then, a special card replaces the usual category:

  • Reverse: the phone now goes the other way (3 players or more).
  • Double answer: give two answers before passing.
  • New category: the category changes mid-round.

Who wins?

Before you start, choose how many explosions knock a player out: 1 to 5. The first player to reach that number loses, and the podium ranks everyone from fewest to most explosions. The game is then saved in your GAMBR history, alongside your other games.
